A Historic Huron County Community with Deep Agricultural Roots

Located in the heart of Huron County, the community of Clinton has long served as an important gathering place for the farms and rural communities that surround it. The town developed during the mid-19th century as settlers established farms across the fertile countryside of southwestern Ontario, and Clinton quickly grew into a service centre where farmers could trade goods, attend markets, and take part in community life.

Today, Clinton’s historic downtown reflects this heritage, with well-preserved buildings, welcoming shops, and a strong sense of small-town character. Visitors travelling through the region often find Clinton to be a convenient stop while exploring the farms, markets, and agritourism destinations that make Huron County one of Ontario’s most productive agricultural areas.

Beyond its agricultural roots, Clinton is also known for its connection to Canada’s radar training history. During the Second World War, the town became home to RCAF Station Clinton, where Allied personnel were trained in radar technology as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. The station later continued as an important radar and communications training centre during the Cold War. Today, a large radar tower located in the downtown area stands as a reminder of this unique chapter in the community’s history.

And Here’s the Rest of the Story…

Every community has a few stories that don’t always make the guidebooks—this is one of them.

Clinton was once known as Rattenbury, a name that reflected its earliest settlement period. The community was later renamed Clinton after Clinton, New York, a change that coincided with its growth and rising importance as a regional centre. Few people realize that Clinton briefly rivalled larger nearby towns as an industrial and commercial hub, thanks to its mills and railway access. While quieter today, the town’s past as a bustling agricultural and industrial crossroads still echoes in its layout, landmarks, and long-standing role at the heart of Huron County.
